Description

TiePie engineering has introduced the WiFiScope series oscilloscopes. The new range WiFi oscilloscopes can be used via an ethernet connection (LAN, WiFi or WAN) but also still with a USB 2.0 / 3.0 connection. The built-in battery gives the WiFiScope the possibility to perform fully wireless measurements. Measurements can then be performed completely galvanically isolated, and over long distances. This wireless PC-based data acquisition instrument offers the user more possibilities for measurement applications.
With a WAN connection, worldwide measurements can be performed. Specific knowledge on networks is not required. The Multi Channel software gives an overview of the available USB instruments and network instruments. Simply tick the instrument and measuring can start. The WiFi oscilloscope has the following advantages:
fully wireless measurements via WiFi are performed (galvanically isolated) because of the built-in battery
mobile measurements are possible, e.g. on transport systems and moving installations
LAN and WAN data acquisition is available for long distance measurements
continuous realtime highspeed data acquisition over both WiFi and LAN/WAN are available
USB measurements for stand-alone applications and highspeed data acquisition up to 200MSa/s.

The WiFiScope is so transparent that it appears that the ethernet connected instrument is connected directly to the computer. All hardware and software functions of the oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, data logger and voltmeter remain available via the network. Specific network knowledge is not required.

Again the TiePie engineering motto applies: Plug in and measure! To reduce PC-based data acquisition installation costs and increase flexibility, WiFi and LAN/WAN measuring instruments are the solution. Measurement applications that were previously not possible, for example long-distance measurements, measurements at unsafe or noisy places, measurements at a moving installation or reading instruments at different places are now available. With the WiFi oscilloscope series from TiePie engineering, reliable WiFi and LAN / WAN measurement solutions can now be obtained without compromising measurement quality.

The WiFi oscilloscope can now be used where previously it was difficult to place a complete measurement setup. Thanks to the WiFi connections, electrical, physical, mechanical and acoustic signals can now be measured remotely. With the WiFi oscilloscope, highspeed realtime continuous data acquisition rates of 5MSamples/second can be achieved with a resolution of 8 to 16 bits and, via LAN/WAN connections, highspeed realtime continuous data acquisition rates of 20MSamples/second can be achieved with a resolution of 8-16 bits. Via USB connections, high speed real time continuous data acquisition rates of 200 MSamples/second can be achieved with a resolution of 8-16 bits.

Galvanically isolated measurements
A big advantage of the WiFiScopes is that no ground loops can occur. In traditional measurement systems, ground loops give many problems, resulting in unreliable measurement results. With the WiFiScope, because of the absence of ground loops, long distance remote measurements are possible without the results being influenced by ground loops. Also on short distances the absence of ground loops is important for performing reliable measurements. The WiFiScope prevents ground loops from forming so that the measurement speed and resolution are not affected and the measurements remain reliable.

The SureConnect connection test feature of the WiFiScope WS6 tells you immediately whether your test probe or clip actually makes electrical contact or not. No more doubt whether your probe makes contact or there really is no signal.

SafeGround gives the possibility to use the oscilloscope inputs both as single ended and as differential. When SafeGround is active and you accidentally create a wrong connection that causes a short circuit, SafeGround will disconnect the ground of the input channel without damaging the oscilloscope or PC. You can therefore simply switch from a differential input to a single ended input without worrying if anything will damage because of a short circuit current1. And as you all know, a connection mistake is easily made, which will now have no more strange and financial consequences because of SafeGround as the short circuit current is limited thanks to SafeGround.

Background: The advantage of an oscilloscope with differential inputs is that there are no connections between the channels and with the ground of the computer. It is therefore not possible to create a short circuit. With SafeGround enabled you can connect a standard 1:10 probe to your channel, this is not possible with a standard differential channel of other oscilloscope manufacturers. Sometimes it is also required to perform a single ended measurement, but then there is a risk of a short circuit.

When you do want to measure with a single ended input, your input is connected to the ground of your oscilloscope and your computer (the alligator clip of your probe is directly connected to ground). The input channels are also connected to each other. When you connect the alligator clip of your probe accidentally to a point in your test subject that is not at ground level but to a point with an elevated voltage, a short circuit current will flow through your probe, oscilloscope and computer. This can cause serious damage to the test subject, the scope and the computer. SafeGround avoids this and safes you a lot of misery. SafeGround can be enabled individually for each channel.

The ground current at which the SafeGround protection activates and shuts off the ground connection is adjustable in steps of 10 mA. This allows to use single ended inputs in a situation where the instrument and the device under test do not have the exact same ground level, e.g. due to voltage drop over a ground connection. The small current that then will flow could activate SafeGround. Setting the current limit to a higher value may keep SafeGround from being activated.

When your device under test is very sensitive to damage, the SafeGround current limit can be set to a lower value, to give the highest level of protection.

SafeGround protects your scope, your computer and your circuit under test against accidental wrong ground connections.

SafeGround properties:

  • Low switch off current
  • High speed switching
  • High voltage protection
  • SafeGround on each channel

WiFi connected

Using a computer based oscilloscope was never easier than with the WiFiScope WS6 DIFF: simply switch it on and start the software on the computer:

  • no power cables required as it is battery powered and can operate hours on a fully charged battery
  • no interface cables required as it uses WiFi to connect to the computer

This allows you to measure fully floating, fully isolated from your computer. The WiFiScope WS6 DIFF can be placed near any test subject that may be hard to reach, or on moving objects, where wired connections are not possible.

Because the WiFiScope WS6 DIFF is not connected to the computer, there is no risk of damaging the computer.

LAN connected

When measuring in remote locations where a wired network is available, the WiFiScope WS6 DIFF can also be used through its LAN port. Measurements can then be performed from any location via the network, without having the computer to be close to the test subject.

Using its 1 Gbit LAN connection, the WiFiScope WS6 DIFF can achieve higher streaming performance than via WiFi.

USB 3.0 connected

When wireless measuring or LAN connected measuring is not required or not possible, the WiFiScope WS6 DIFF can also be connected via its USB3 port. This gives the benefit of even higher streaming performance. Additionally, when connected via USB, the WiFiScope WS6 DIFF can be combined with oscilloscopes via its CMI interface.

Program / Software Information

Software
Combined with the Multi-Channel oscilloscope software, the WiFiScope WS6 and WiFiScope WS5 turn your PC into an High Resolution Oscilloscope, Precision Spectrum Analyzer, High Performance Multimeter, Very Fast Datalogger and Comprehensive Protocol Analyzer. A full Software Development Kit (SDK) for writing your own PC-based data acquisition software is available, as well as examples in C, C++, C#, Python, Matlab, Node.js and Visual Basic.NET. Own written data acquisition software for the Handyscope HS5 and Handyscope HS6 DIFF can be used directly for the WiFiScope WS5 and WiFiScope WS6. Developing the software for a USB data acquisition system or a wireless high speed WiFi data acquisition system makes no difference and the developed software can be used transparently.
